From time to time someone suggests I look on eBay when I am trying to find something I want. I have resisted. Actually, I never could bother with setting up an account.
This morning as I sat here with my coffee and a vintage decor magazine, I saw an article on Pie Birds. Pie Birds are cute little ceramics that are put in the center of the pie filling to vent steam and juices through the crust.
In the last century when I was young and lived in Seattle, I bought a Pie Bird. It is a little blackbird, nothing antique(at the time), just very cute and I wanted to put it in the middle of my next blackberry pie. The other little bird belonged to my mom and that in itself makes it precious. I imagine that it is from the 40's, but I don't know.
Anyhoo, the magazine article said that there is a pie bird collectors group! They even have a convention every year! This seems crazy but, really, why not? There are much worse things people can spend their time doing. Back to Ebay. Curiosity and a search engine took me to collectorsweekly.com. One thing they do is post "most watched eBay auctions". If I go on eBay, it looks like I could have a major pie bird collection in no time and for not much money. A group of 3 items looks like it sells for $5.15, maybe. Cheap. But my favorite is the orange Scottie dog for $21. Not all pie birds are birds. The English bobby is going for $62.99. You can see how eBay would be a dangerous place for me.
